Many BC gov’t web apps face security threats: report

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Security threats can be found on more than half of BC government web applications looked at in a new Auditor General report.
A web application refers to programs embedded in a website designed to perform specific tasks. Webmail, login pages, product requests and registration forms are some examples.
Minister of Technology and Innovation Andrew Wilkinson says the province is accepting all of the recommendations in order to fix the problem.
“What we’re doing of course is addressing the concerns that were raised in the report which are forward looking to provide more robust systems than we already have.”
The Auditor General recommends vulnerability scans be done on a regular basis.
He claims the public doesn’t need to be concerned, “because the government websites and information systems are regularly attacked by hackers and there has never been a successful break-in to the system.”
Crown corporations, schools, and health authorities were not a part of the audit.
