Crews shut down Burrard St Bridge lane for roadwork

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You’re likely going to run into delays this morning if you use the Burrard Street Bridge.
Jerry Dobrovolny with the City of Vancouver says one of the southbound lanes will be shut down until July to allow crews to update the structure.
“It’s an 81-year-old bridge. It’s safe and in fairly good shape. But, as with any older structure, it needs regular maintenance and repair,” he explains.
He adds they’ll also be replacing bearings, patching concrete and inspecting the bridge deck. “This is replacing the 19 expansion joints that run right across the bridge.”
“That may slow down some of the travel times. We encourage people to use the Granville Bridge or the Cambie Bridge; there’s lot of capacity on those bridges,” says Dobrovolny.
Dobrovolny also says more work is planned. “There’s future work also scheduled for the bridge, in terms or replacements, railings and sidewalks that need to be replaced; that’s something we’re looking at doing in the next capital plan.”
