Second Vancouver Olympics not impossible: Furlong

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Could Vancouver host the Olympics again?

The idea of hosting a second Olympic games isn’t as far-fetched as some people might think.

Former Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC) CEO John Furlong says anything is possible.

Vancouver wouldn’t be alone.

London, Paris and Los Angeles are among the cities that have hosted the Games twice.

The former VANOC boss says a lot of the work is already done.

“I think the biggest challenge for a city like Vancouver or Calgary to do it all over again, is the challenge of building another athletes’ village. The capacity is there to do it but the village is the thing. And people are living in all these condominiums so you’d have to start again. That is an extraordinary project to build.”

But he says there is a growing push to eliminate the idea of the athletes’ village.

“This whole idea that you have to have villages at all, that could change everything. If the village was not the centre-piece of how the whole games is sort of molded together, I think you would.”

Furlong says it’s more likely that Quebec makes the next Canadian bid and despite reports, says he wouldn’t rule out Toronto.
