Number of drivers using Pattullo up thousands from 2013

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – Whether it’s because of the Port Mann tolls is still up for debate, but we can tell you thousands more people a day are driving over the Pattullo Bridge compared to a year ago.
On some days in January, there were several thousand more vehicles going both north and south on the bridge compared to the same time a year ago.
That’s according to new numbers released today by TransLink.
New Westminster city councillor Chuck Puchmayr says people in his city are feeling the extra traffic.
“The concern is that the livability of our residents is extremely compromised by this additional traffic. People are locked into their homes during rush hour. They can’t get out.”
The City of New West has been trying to get the tolls on the Port Mann reduced to encourage more people to use that bridge instead of the Pattullo.
“When a government spends five billion in infrastructure to take people off city streets and put them on highways and it does just the opposite for our city, that is certainly an extreme cause for concern,” argues Puchmayr.
Puchmayr also says city statistics show truck traffic is up 10 per cent compared to a year ago on McBride Boulevard.
