Drivers turn to BCAA during icy road mayhem

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Emergency crews weren’t the only ones dealing with icy roads and dozens of accidents this morning. BCAA had a busy start to their day helping Lower Mainland drivers.
Associate Vice President for Road Assist Ken Cousins says they were busy right up until 10am with “a thousand calls for service, which is probably about 50-percent over the normal volume we get in a day.”
Cousins says the main issue they dealt with was tire damage as cars slammed into curbs or poles trying to get traction on slippery roads.
Like police, Cousins warns the best thing you can do in the winter is slow down, and expect the unexpected. “As you get into areas with shade or under trees or areas that [crews] haven’t had an opportunity to treat yet for ice, we’re going to see some icy weather. So make sure your vehicle’s prepared and you can see well.”
Snow may be a rarity on the Southern West Coast, but Cousins says you should still think about investing in winter tires which handle better on frost and ice.
