UBC asked to look into more surveillance

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – UBC is taking a cautious step towards adding more surveillance cameras on campus, after a series of sex assaults last year. A task force on campus safety is recommending the university develop a clear policy on their use. Surveillance cameras are currently used inside a number of campus buildings, but the task force notes there are very few of them outside.
The group’s interim report recommends the university prepare a policy on the use of cameras as it seeks input. Director of campus security Barry Eccleton says the cameras likely would not lead to less crime, but may still be helpful.
“What we are suggesting here is introducing a limited number of cameras that would be used for investigative purposes after the fact.”
If eventually approved, the intent would be to install cameras at key campus entry and exit points. Eccleton says they’re also working on lighting and visibility.
“These recommendations that we’re issuing in this report really build on what’s already a very sound safety base for the campus and its residents.”
The task force was put together late last year after a six sex assaults, the last of which took place in late October, and which RCMP continue to investigate. A final task force report is expected in March.
