VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s almost Valentine’s Day. You’ve got the chocolates and the flowers, but you’ve probably forgotten that oh-so-romantic discussion about… retirement finances.
As we close in on Valentine’s Day, Canadian couples may be feeling the love for each other, but apparently not over their golden years.
Strangely, only about 25 per cent of couples have had any kind of detailed discussion about their financial future, according to BMO Financial Group.
There seems be a controversy over who is a better retirement planner. Chris Buttigieg with BMO says both men and women think they’re number one!
“Men were twice as likely to say they consider themselves the key decision-maker, compared to their partner. Same thing for women; they were more likely to consider themselves the key decision-maker.”
But he says it doesn’t really matter who’s calling the shots, as long as you’re on the same page.
“If one is more focused on savings, perhaps the other is more focused on spending. That’s where conflict can result because there isn’t a balance between saving and spending.
According to Buttigieg, getting the finances ironed out is key to a good relationship as money issues are the number one cause of marital strife.
We here in BC apparently have the highest percentage of couples who’ve actually discussed how they’re going to achieve their retirement goals.
