Safety concerns remain in Newton

SURREY (NEWS1130) – People who live in Newton say they’re still worried about their safety.
Dozens came out to a public safety forum Saturday afternoon to talk about the issue. They say it’s still a worry for them even though security has been tightened around the arena where a hockey mom was fatally attacked.
Windows have been added to Newton Arena, there is expanded video surveillance and security guards patrol the area during all public programming.
But one of the speakers, also a hockey mom who lives nearby, says parks haven’t improved.
“Unwin Park is a disgrace and it’s disgusting. I am so tired of watching prostitutes and men have sex in my park where my children play baseball.”
The crowd broke into applause at her statement.
Surrey has added more police resources in Newton since the death of Julie Paskall. She was killed in a random attack in December while waiting for her son at the Newton Arena.
