‘Surrey needs monorail,’ says entrepreneur

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A local entrepreneur thinks he has the answer to transportation woes in Surrey.
John Murchie of Murch Tech Corporation is pitching light-weight monorail.
He says the company has a patent that lightens up the weight of a typical monorail car, greatly reducing the cost of construction.
“There are 13 monorail systems in the world. But the cars are so heavy, they need a heavy-duty structure. So we have to lighten the car to lighten the cost.”
He claims the cost of their system would be very competitive. “Advanced light rapid transit is $35 to $45 million a mile. If it uses a tunnel it’s more. Our system is only $7 million a mile.”
He says the city has been receptive, and is developing a report on the feasibility of such a line.
He wants to set up a prototype on 104 Ave. between Guildford and Central City. He says it would cost a million dollars and that construction could begin as early as next year.
