Teachers court ruling put on hold

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC Teachers Federation is calling on the province to get on quickly with its court appeal.
This, after the union lost the latest legal battle with the government over class size and composition.
The province won’t have to go back to 2002 teacher contract levels right away, following a decision in BC’s highest court, which has temporarily stayed an earlier judge’s decision.
That issue will instead be sorted out when the province returns to court to appeal the original ruling.
Jim Iker of the BC Teachers Federation wants the appeal heard soon to ensure certainty in the next school year.
“We’re hoping now that government will work with us to get the appeal hearing happening expeditiously.”
This latest ruling found it would have caused irreparable harm to have moved back to 2002 levels before the province’s appeal is heard.
Iker denies it’s a setback for the union.
“We’re going to concentrate on the appeal. We know what the Supreme Court decision has said. We know what’s right for our students.”
The union is holding a strike vote next week, while negotiations on a new contract continue.
