Travellers looking for better spring break value this year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There are only a few weeks to go until spring break, and a travel expert says people are making some changes to their vacation plans this year.
The declining dollar could be the difference-maker.
Brad Davies with Virtually There Travel hasn’t seen demand go down, but travellers are looking for better value. He tells us they’re opting for cheaper hotels or for local resorts, rather than other parts of the world.
“And they’re more apt to look at different pricing options and maybe looking at shifting dates around so they’re not paying any spring break surcharges, so to speak,” adds Davies.
He adds many people haven’t booked their vacations as far ahead as they have other years. “And with the dollar declining to the extent that it has… if it continues to decline, it’ll be a problem. But we haven’t reached that critical point just yet.”
Davies points out the dollar will ultimately return to levels it has been at before.
“If a client is intelligent on their pricing and doing their research, you can still get a good holiday that’s comprised of a lot of different value. And the dollar wouldn’t be a reason to stay home — not just yet, anyway.”
A big bank study has found more than 40 per cent of Canadians say they’re less likely to go away this spring because of the declining loonie; 49 per cent of British Columbians say the falling dollar will likely keep them at home.
