HMCS Protecteur passengers stay positive

ESQUIMALT (NEWS1130) – Some of the civilians who were aboard an Esquimalt-based navy ship that caught fire in the Pacific Ocean are now talking about the experience.

Arlene Veenhof says she was playing cards aboard HMCS Protecteur last week when she heard a fire alarm sound, and at first she thought it was just a drill.

She’s remaining upbeat about the ordeal that unfolded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, saying she signed up for an adventure and got one.

The Protecteur is expected to be back in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, by tomorrow, and navy officials say the effort to tow the 45-year-old ship back to port was complicated when a tow line snapped on Sunday.
