Don’t expect lower fares on new Van Isle flights from Delta

DELTA (NEWS1130) – In a couple of weeks, Boundary Bay Airport in Delta will be offering flights to Vancouver Island for the time ever, but prices aren’t much cheaper and there’s a reason for that.
The reason for that is to avoid heavy traffic congestion on our roads, should an influx of people choose to fly with Harbour Air, Helijet or Air Canada, according to Gerry Visser with Island Express Air.
“Now we can save them at least 45 minutes of bumper-to-bumper [traffic]. They can get off at Highway 10, take Ladner Trunk Road, right on to the Boundary Bay Airport. It’s a 15-minute check-in and 15 minutes later, they’re in Victoria.”
Just to give you an idea, it’s anywhere between $115 and $152 to go to Victoria, including taxes.
“These aircrafts are $1,000 an hour to operate and we need to break even. We need them to be half-full each way. So, that price is as low as we can go with the cost of fuel and all the fees that are involved with running an airline,” says Visser.
He adds they’re more reliable than the float planes because they’re not weather-dependent. Operations out of Boundary Bay begin March 31st.
Three years ago, the airport had one single aircraft flying to Vancouver Island but it stopped services due to a lack of demand at the time.
