BCTF tables contract proposal following strike vote

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s Education Minister says teachers have tabled a contract proposal for government consideration. This comes following a strike vote where teachers chose overwhelmingly in favor of job action.
Peter Fassbender says he doesn’t have all the details in the proposal tabled Friday by the teachers’ union, but the government bargaining team and chief negotiator will be looking at costs this week.
Fassbender claims the government has been waiting for the BC Teachers’ Federation to put an offer forward so bargaining can resume. “I can’t tell you how close or far apart we are. My understanding is that their wage proposal is significantly higher than most of the other public service unions have settled for at this stage.”
As for the government’s wants, Fassbender maintains they “are still wanting to negotiate a longterm agreement. We have clearly said we want to see longterm stability in the classrooms, and that continues to be our goal.”.
Nearly 30-thousand teachers voted 89-percent in favor of job action last week.
