VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A new study has found a worrying trend with obesity across the country.
In five years, 21 per cent of Canadians are predicted to be overweight.
The study also finds obesity rates across Canada have tripled in the last 20 years.
If things don’t turn around, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba will all soon have more obese people than those at a healthy weight.
The study’s author, Laurie Twells, says there is no real quick fix. “One of the key things is to learn a little more about what is happening across the country, and whether some province’s can learn from others in terms of best practice.”
BodyBreak’s Hal Johnson isn’t surprised. “We all have about the same amount of will power, it’s whatever habits we have.”
He says the government needs to a better job at creating incentives and taxing unhealthy foods.
