Group wants delayed public hearing for Casa Mia proposal

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A community group that doesn’t want to see Vancouver mansion Casa Mia become a care home is hoping to have the public hearing on the proposal delayed.
The hearing is set to happen on Thursday, but Joe McDermid with the Southlands Community Association is hoping a BC Supreme Court judge will grant an injunction, delaying that hearing.
“We’re asking them to hold off on that and send this back to the planning department until the questions are answered that we’re looking to get answers to,” explains McDermid.
The application for the injunction is set to be heard today.
McDermid says he’s not opposed to seniors housing in the area, but among the reasons he’s against this proposal is that it isn’t in line with the neighbourhood’s community plan or guidelines for community care facilities.
“The primary point of contention is that the facility as proposed basically meets none of these guidelines. There’s no transit, there’s no community centre, there’s no public access, there’s no libaries, there’s nowhere to walk to, there’s no public transportation, there’s not even sidewalks in front of this place.”
He feels there should have been more community consultation.
“The City has not been forthcoming. They’re not adhering to their own guidelines; the community hasn’t been involved,” he argues.
If plans for a care home go ahead, the mansion on Southwest Marine Drive would have 62 beds.
Casa Mia was built in the early 1930s.
