COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Crews will be making some changes to the way the Evergreen Line in Coquitlam is built after a beam buckled during construction last week.
Project Director Amanda Farrell says engineers have determined there was a problem with a temporary concrete spacer, but “I don’t have the technical reason for the spacer to fail at this point.”
Spacers like that one have been used in other projects like the Canada Line and Millennium Line.
“One of the things I would say is that obviously we’ve looked at where else there are these types of concrete spacers…they are only at this location. The other ones at this location have been supported through metal shims and jacks. We will not be using these types of concrete spacers as we move forward.”
She maintains the beam was not in danger of falling because it was resting on a support column.
“The engineers completed a thorough examination over the weekend, and as a further precaution additional bracing and supports were installed to ensure the guide way is stable and safe.”
She says engineers have deemed the project to be structurally sound.
The area may be shut down to traffic in the coming weeks so crews ca finalize a plan to put a beam back in place.
