Transportation plebiscite results expected by the end of the month

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You won’t have to wait much longer to know which side won the transportation plebiscite.

Elections BC now expects to release the results by the end of the month.

When the voting period closed last Friday at 8 p.m., about 699,000 ballots were turned in. That’s a voter turnout of about 45 per cent.

“We expect to announce the results to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the public and then the media before the end of June,” says the agency’s Don Main.

He says the secrecy envelopes are opened by a machine and explains the rest of the process:

“They’ve been shipped back to our facilities in Victoria and we are continuing with the opening the yellow packages and doing the initial process. And then the rest of the process is opening all of the certification envelopes that we’ve received that have a birth date and a signature on them that match our records… and then we’ll be batching the ballots in batches of 1,000 and counting those through an electronic scanning process.”

It was initially thought results would not be released until early July.

The voting period closed last week after being open for more than two months.
