Man charged with arson after Surrey fire

The Surrey RCMP says charges, including arson, have been laid in connection with a fire in the Newton area last month.

Mounties received reports of a fire that was believed to have been deliberately set  in the area of 66 Avenue and 127 Street the afternoon of April 26.

One person was arrested in connection with the incident, which police described at the time as “suspicious in nature.” Multiple units in the complex had to be evacuated, and a total of three units were affected by the fire.

No injuries were reported.

The RCMP says 22-year-old Amritpal Dhindsa has since been charged with arson, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Dhindsa remains in custody until his next court date, set for Friday.
