Memorial service for ‘King of Swing’ Dal Richards set for Saturday

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Funeral services for Vancouver’s “King of Swing” are set for this weekend.

Legendary bandleader Dal Richards passed away on New Year’s Eve at the age of 97.

Mourners are set to gather at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ Church Cathedral for the service.

A reception limited to family, friends, and colleagues will follow.

Richards performed on 78 consecutive New Year’s Eves, but 2015 was the first time since 1936 Richards stayed home, due to health issues.

Richards was a recipient of the order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia, and was granted the Freedom of the City by Vancouver City Council in 2005. He is also a member of the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame.
