Uber is being audited: report

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – The controversial ride-sharing company Uber is being audited by the Canada Revenue Agency. Reports say the CRA tried to take the company to court.
The audit process began in February and Buzzfeed reports the agency launched legal action in October, claiming the company wasn’t providing all the information that was requested, even with several deadline extensions.
While the CRA is keeping quiet, Uber tells us us that this is a routine audit and it actually did meet the government’s October deadline for producing all its information — but the CRA jumped the gun and went to court hours before that. The company points out the case was dropped 11 days later.
It’s still not clear whether tens of thousands of Uber drivers across the country will be swept up in the audit. Uber Canada does have a section on its website telling drivers they are responsible for filing their own taxes as independent contractors, and that it fulfills its own obligations as a company.
Uber has had a series of regulatory battles — mainly with municipal and provincial governments — over taxi regulations.
