VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Admitting services like Uber are in limbo and Vancouver’s mayor is hoping the province finds a solution for ride-hailing apps in the coming months.
It’s up to the Passenger Transportation Board, run by the province, to roll this out, says Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.
“I’m sure people who want good service would like to see it happen sooner,” says Robertson. “It is taking a while to get to a landing place with all of this. I’m hopeful that it happens in the near term, in the next few months we see a solution.”
But he says when it does come, the ridesharing service we get must be better than equivalents in some other cities.
“In many cities around the world, they’re not meeting the standard that we have in Vancouver for accessibility, for green cabs, for ensuring that drivers have appropriate background checks and insurance,” says Robertson. “So we want to make sure all of that is covered.”
Robertson also says these new services must operate on a level playing field with cabs.
