Compass fare gates closing this week

By

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Despite suggestions from TransLink that you’ll see closed fare gates everywhere today, that’s not quite the case — at least, not yet.

Although many commuters were under the understanding that it would be an all-or-nothing situation, the transit authority says there will still be some open gates still at SeaBus, SkyTrain and West Coast Express terminals.

The changes will start today, but it’ll be Friday before they take effect system-wide.

Jennifer Morland with TransLink says things are going smoothly so far.

“Generally speaking, people have got an understanding of how the system works. One thing we do want to remind our customers is if you’re travelling on a bus with FareSavers, then you do need a Compass Card or a Compass ticket to get through the fare gates.”

Morland was speaking at Lougheed Town Centre Station this morning, where the gates are now shut.

“We also have gates closed along the Canada Line in Richmond and several other stations closed in Burnaby and New West. Each day, we’ll be closing an additional 10 stations or so, until we get to Friday, April 8th, with full gate closure.”

The move is the latest step in getting all commuters who depend on transit to use Compass Cards.
