Pilot dead after plane crashes in downtown Powell River

POWELL RIVER (NEWS 1130) – The pilot of a small plane is dead after the aircraft crashed in downtown Powell River.

Cpl. Aubrey Hachey with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre says the crash happened near an intersection around 11:30 a.m. Monday. Ambulance crews were able to get to the scene quickly because the crash happened in a central location.

Bill Yearwood with the Transportation Safety Board says the plane was a Piper twin-engine aircraft. “The pilot was the sole person on board and he is deceased. We are trying to get organized to help the RCMP and the coroner.”

He notes the plane was registered more than 200 kilometres away. “The pilot [was in] a private aircraft. It is registered in Pitt Meadows.”

The man’s identity has not been released.

There’s no word yet on what caused the crash.
