NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Emergency crews were called out early this morning after a large fire broke out behind Capilano University on the North Shore and explosions from the blaze made things a little tricky to tackle.

The blaze was in the area of Monashee Drive, which isn’t far from the school and it’s next to Northwest Kennels and Daycare. Crews say all the dogs are protected from the smoke. The fire chief on scene confirms some small tanks did explode when the fire really got going.
Several people called the NEWS 1130 newsroom this morning, including one man who thought a car had crashed. “The explosion was quite big. It shook our house and we’re about two miles away. So I went out and looked out the front and all of a sudden I could see a huge plume of black smoke coming up and out. I phoned 911 and they said, “Yes, there were two other phone calls before you,’ and they said they were heading there.”
Luckily, crews got to the industrial site quick enough to control the blaze at a workshop inside a sheet metal building. Lisa Madill lives in the area. “I heard a loud explosion. Our bedroom shook and woke myself and my husband up. And I took a look out the window to see if I could see anything from my window, which I couldn’t and about two minutes later I started to smell smoke.”
