Businesses in BC impacted by the fires even when they aren’t threatened by flames

PENTICTON (NEWS 1130) – The wildfires aren’t threatening things like wineries in the Okanagan, but businesses there are still dealing with tourists canceling trips.

Tina Baird wth the Naramata Bench Wineries Association says there’s a misconception that the area is in danger.

“There are people who are calling in and cancelling recreational bookings that they have done or accommodation booking because they are very concerned about the fires, but there are no fires here. That’s the key thing, there are no fires here.”

She says the area’s only real concern right now is some occasional smoke from the wildfires.

Roland Kruger with the Okanagan Falls Wineries Association says a lot of people still think the area’s wineries are in trouble.

“They are phoning, wondering how thick the smoke is or how close the fire is to us. Geographically it’s a huge province.”

And he says many people don’t realize that other than some occasional smoke, the Okanagan is unaffected by the province’s wildfires.
