Cherry Blossom Festival to light up Queen Elizabeth Park

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – After all the rain that’s fallen over the last several weeks, you may be itching for a way to celebrate spring.
For one night only, the trees in Queen Elizabeth Park will have a mystical glow this evening as people gather for Spring Lights, which is part of the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival.
Creative Director Stuart Ward with HFOUR studio –which created the event– says a lot of different elements will be used to give the park an other-worldly glow.
“A half a dozen high-powered projectors with custom-made video content that’s vibrant and colourful,” he explains.
Ward says he got the idea for the event after seeing people gather under cherry blossoms in Japan.
“My background is in light art and projections, so I decided to see if I could merge the two ideas together and use the cherry blossom canopy as like a canvas or screen for projection.”
He adds spectators will also be able to take in dances as well as art installations throughout.
“There’s a surprise this year with a couple of sculptural forms, we’ve got a bunch of little ball lights making a tunnel effect, we’ve got illuminated doorways, there’s a lot of great moments for people to experience in this walkthrough.”
Spring Lights is now in its sixth year, and tonight’s one-night only event is free and set to go from dusk until 10 p.m. It is weather-dependent, so if it’s raining heavily tonight it may be pushed to tomorrow.
