Port Moody Fire Rescue warning about the dangers of mudflats

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) – A warning from Port Moody Fire Rescue about the dangers of the mudflats in that city.

Deputy Chief Kirk Heaven is telling people to stay away because it’s so easy to get stuck.

“Even if you are with somebody, they will both sink and you cannot get out of it. It causes a vacuum. If you try and pull somebody out you will actually injure them because their body will not move. It’s like their body is stuck in concrete.”

He says crews were out training today and have special equipment to reach people who get stuck, including mud rescue boots.

“We can walk out there, you’ll still sink in them, but nothing like regular shoes or boots. Then we go in and we put a nozzle in and put high-pressure water in and that is enough to break the seal of the vacuum and then the person can free themselves out.”

Heaven says a few years back, they had to rescue someone who was stuck up to their shoulders.
