Candlelight vigil for murdered Surrey teens

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A mix of anger and sadness for people in Surrey Saturday as a candlelight vigil lit up Holland Park, honouring the lives of two teens killed earlier this month.

On June 4th, 16-year-old Jason Jhutty, and 17-year-old Jesse Bhangal were gunned down in a rural area on 40th Avenue between 192nd and 184th Streets.

IHIT is still investigating and there’s no word yet on who may have killed the pair.

While people remembered the pair of lives they lost, they called on politicians at all levels of government to take action to stop the violence that has plagued Surrey.

Liberal MP for Surrey-Newton Sukh Dhaliwal was at the vigil. He was confronted by angry people there, as well as Bhangal’s father, who wondered why violence has become such an issue in their city.

On Wednesday, hundreds gathered at City Hall for a rally to end gang violence. A civic party in Surrey believes gang violence needs to be on the agenda in the upcoming civic election.  Gord Savard with Surrey Community Alliance says party members share the community’s frustration with the level of violence plaguing Surrey.

“There has to be something done and we suggest there be a committee established of lawmakers, law enforcement, as well as those involved with the Surrey school district and community memebers. And we need a multi-pronged approach to tackle this issue.”
The party thinks it’s time Surrey has its own police force, like Vancouver and West Vancouver.
