BC nurses approve new contract with the provincial government

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The BC Nurses’ Union is the latest group of health workers to approve a new three-year contract with the provincial government.

More than 21,000 members voted 54 per cent in favour of a tentative deal reached in November. The vote was held on Jan. 21.

“I believe we have negotiated an innovative contract that will make a positive impact on the working lives of our members and the patients in their care,” BCNU President Christine Sorensen said in a news release.

“However, nurses have sent a clear message to the government that they are skeptical real change will come,” she added.

The new collective agreement, which comes into effect April 2019 and expires in March 2022, includes more nurses being hired to address heavy workload complaints. The union says this will lead to nurses being better able to provide quality, safe patient care.

“While more needs to be done, this contract is a step in the right direction,” Sorensen said.
