VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Dozens of trees have been vandalized at the Langara golf course in Vancouver.
According to the Vancouver Park Board, dozens of trees have been damaged in the past four weeks.
Director of Parks Howard Normann calls the incident “senseless vandalism,” noting the damage is estimated to be in the tens of thousands.
This is the third time something like this has happened in the last few weeks. In December several trees were discovered with their tops chopped off at Spanish Banks. A similar incident took place in North Vancouver.
The Vancouver Park Board says it’s still unclear if all of the incidents are related.

Normann says the board dealt with a similar issue back in 2017, but after a short investigation, the vandalism stopped.
“Since then, it’s escalated again. We have at the moment 64 trees that have been cut down.”
He says this time the trees were cut randomly around the golf course, both on the perimeter and in the interior of the course.
Whoever is responsible is likely cutting the trees at night, Normann says, adding that the area is too busy during the day.
As for the motive, the board says it is still unclear.
“There’s no real view corridor for anybody, there’s nothing that really makes any sense,” Normann adds. “It doesn’t really stop or impede the golfers so we’re in a bit of a dead-end here trying to figure out why somebody would be doing this.”
He says the board has asked the Vancouver Police Department for help with the investigation.
