Langley woman who paid White Rock company to destroy cheques shocked to learn they were not

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – When Debbie Schuurman paid to have her financial records destroyed, she didn’t think she’d see them again.

Schuurman went into a UPS store in Langley’s Walnut Grove about three weeks ago and says it was expensive to have her information destroyed. Shredwise has a shredding bin with services for purchase at the UPS branch at 505-8850 210 St.

But uncashed, signed cheques belonging to her are some of the documents NEWS 1130 has discovered were not destroyed by the company in White Rock. ShredWise has been storing intact, complete documents that were meant to be shredded in unlocked bins, in an unsecured parking lot about 100 metres from Old Yale Road in Surrey.

According to a whistleblower, these documents have been in these bins for up to two weeks before they are destroyed.

Schuurman was not impressed to learn we had seen six of her uncashed, signed cheques — all including her personal information like name, address, phone number, and bank account number.

“I am kind of shocked because you bring that to a shredding company with the idea that it disappears,” she told NEWS 1130. “They shred it so nobody can get a hold of it, so I’m kind of shocked.”

She says it wasn’t cheap to pay for her documents to be shredded either, and says she won’t be going to that store again. “I don’t know what I can do about that, but I’m not impressed.”

Tino Fluckiger, CEO of ShredWise, has blamed the breach on an “employee issue,” saying it’s not normally how they do business.
