COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A car has been obliterated in a fiery fatal crash early Monday morning in Coquitlam.
RCMP say speed likely played a part in the deadly crash.
The incident took place on Lougheed Highway near Alderson Avenue at about 1 a.m. on Monday. Police say a black Tesla Model X slammed into a utility pole and burst into flames.
The driver died at the scene.
Police say is too early to tell if drugs or alcohol were factors, but the driver is believed to have been speeding.
Incident commander with the fire department says the crash one of the more serious he’s seen and is urging people to slow down.
The driver’s name is not being released.
Mounties are hoping someone will come forward with dash cam video of the crash.
The RCMP’s Criminal Crash Investigation Team and reconstruction specialists are working to establish exactly what led to the crash.
A westbound section of Lougheed Highway between Blue Mountain Street and Alderson Avenue was closed overnight. The route was re-opened Monday afternoon.
