Iconic Corkscrew rollercoaster permanently closed as Playland opens this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Playland is opening this weekend but fans of an iconic ride may be disappointed to learn it will not be running.

The Corkscrew rollercoaster, known for its many twists, turns and loops has been around since 1994 but has now reached the end of the line.

Laura Balance is a spokesperson for Playland, she says the ride just doesn’t fit into amusement park’s future.

“The Corkscrew is an iconic Playland ride that has a lot of nostalgic value. But as with any amusement park ride there is a plan to change over those rides,” she says. “That ride was never envisioned as being part of the future of a new Playland.”

Ballance says in order to make way for new rides, the Corkscrew has since been put up for sale and will be disassembled and shipped off once it’s bought.

“Although it holds sentimental value for both our staff and our guests, it’s time to make way for Playland’s expansion. So, that ride is currently up for sale.”

She says while fans of the coaster may be disappointed, there are plenty of new attractions debuting including a new ride named geared towards thrill seekers.

“We’re excited, we’re looking at a new ride this year, called the ‘Sea to Sky Swinger’. That ride is in the final preparation for opening, and we’re hoping it’ll open this Saturday.”

Balance says the ride starts slow and low before raising you up quickly until it “feels like you’re in the mountains”.

Playland’s gates open Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
