Gregor Robertson appointed global ambassador for environmental coalition

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver’s former mayor is about to share his ideas about climate action with leaders from around the world. Gregor Robertson has accepted an ambassador role with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.

Robertson says his experience as mayor of Vancouver helped prepare him for the new role.

“I learned a lot about how cities are grappling with climate change impacts here in Vancouver,” he says. “We’re better prepared than almost any other city in the world, but there’s cities all over the world, particularly in developing countries, that are getting very hard hit by climate disasters, flooding, big storms, real impacts and loss of life.”

The Global Covenant of Mayors is run by the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Michael R. Bloomberg, and European Commission Vice President, Maroš Šefčovič. The organization is a coalition of over 9,000 cities and is the largest global alliance for climate leadership.

In his role as ambassador, the former mayor will be taking his knowledge of urban climate change strategies to organizations around the world.

“I’m hoping I can take what I’ve learned here in Vancouver and working with mayors around the world to really advocate to the United Nations, to World Bank, to national governments to get more resources, more funding to support cities on the frontlines of this fight.”
