Surrey RCMP will hoist pride flag despite threats of protest

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — The Surrey RCMP is planning to hoist the pride flag tomorrow, despite threats of protests.
Anti-LGBTQ group Culture Guard has promised to come out and rally against the move if the flag is flown at the RCMP detachment near City Hall, but the Mounties aren’t backing down.

In an email to NEWS 1130, Sgt. Chad Greig says RCMP will lead by example by promoting diversity and inclusion.
“As Canada’s national police service, it is important that the RCMP lead by example in promoting diversity and inclusion. The Pride flag represents equality and inclusion and displaying of the flag is a reflection, acknowledgement and support for a community within a larger community,” he wrote in a email.

He says all RCMP employees are encouraged to participate in local events, parades, festivals and other activities to mark pride.
“We are aware of a group’s intent to protest the Surrey RCMP’s Pride event on Monday and respect their right to a lawful democratic protest,” he says.
