Canadians are changing their coffee habits: new study

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It seems more Canadians are brewing their coffee at home. To mark International Coffee Day, a new report called Coffee in Canada: An Unfiltered Look, looks at our relationship with the black brew.

The poll, from Angus Reid, found 40 per cent of Canadians have changed their coffee-purchasing habits over the last year, with a quarter concerned about quality.

Millennials are especially concerned with cost, and Robert Phelps with Silver Chef, which commissioned the poll, says this means more brewing at home.

“Sixty per cent of British Columbians purchase their coffee in a supermarket to brew at home,” he says. “Only five per cent are actually buying online.”

In B.C., consumers are thinking more about the environment, mostly focusing on to-go cups but also on the origin of the beans.

“Twenty-two per cent of Canadians, specifically in B.C, say sustainability is certainly a more important factor when deciding where to buy coffee now than it was a year ago.”
