Man on mobility scooter falls down elevator shaft at Yaletown-Roundhouse station

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A man on a mobility scooter had to be taken to hospital after he fell about 30 feet down an elevator shaft at the Yaletown-Roundhouse station Monday night.
Assistant Fire Chief Dan Stroup with Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services says the man somehow got the elevator door open around 7:00 p.m., and ended up landing on top of the elevator car with his scooter.
“It was obviously an usual call,” he says. “It could have been a bad situation.”
Crews were able to get the man out and to the hospital.
“I’m not sure how the door was able to be opened,” Stroup says. “In the end, he seemed to be, he was standing on his own and he went to hospital to be checked out because of the distance of the fall.”
The Metro Vancouver Transit Police says the man had minor injuries.
“There’s a lot of cameras around, so of course that would be part of our investigation from a policing side to make sure there wasn’t anything nefarious that occurred,” says Sergeant Clint Hampton. “Any time we have an incident like this where we have a medical emergency, if we have things like CCTV available, then that’s something that we’re going to review.”
