DELTA (NEWS 1130) — Playing golf during a pandemic isn’t sitting right with the mayor of Delta where some courses are still open or set to reopen soon.
Mayor George Harvie says he’s not buying arguments from some of the courses claiming people need to be able to go out and do something while during the pandemic.
But he says it isn’t essential and argues people need to understand the current situation.
“We’re in a pandemic, I mean people have to realize this, the sooner that we tie everything down like we are, we’ll get over it quicker.”
Harvie explains the city doesn’t have the power to hand out tickets to people or businesses for not following the rules, but he has written to the Premier asking for that to change.
He reiterates public health orders to stay home and avoid gathering in groups.
“We’ve been educating people for four weeks. The ones that aren’t complying are never going to comply,” Harvie says, adding there are other options than going to a golf course.
“Well, I’m doing things. I’m painting around my house; I’m doing some chores; I’m trying to catch up on things so that when this is over, and it will be over, I’ll have a lot of free time.”
The Links at Hampton Cove says on their website they’re open, while the Kings Links by the Sea is set to re-open on Friday.
Delta courses, though, aren’t alone in staying open during the pandemic.
With nice weather on the way, the Redwoods golf course in Langley is pretty much booked for the weekend.
