Fourth straight day of increased COVID-19 cases in B.C.

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — The province has announced 25 new COVID-19 cases, marking the fourth straight day B.C. has seen an increase in new cases, while another death has also been reported.

This is the highest new case count in a single day since May 8, when 29 people were diagnosed.

In a joint release Friday from Health Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, they say there are currently 187 active cases in the province, which is the highest since mid-June.

“There has been one new COVID-19 related death in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, for a total of 187 deaths in British Columbia. We offer our condolences to everyone who has lost their loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dix and Henry say.

Sixteen people are in hospital due to COVID-19, one less than the day before, but five of them are in intensive care, which is one more than Thursday.

So far, 3,053 cases have been recorded in B.C. Of those, 2,679 people have recovered, meaning the recovery rate is still at 88 per cent.

Dix and Henry didn’t have any new outbreaks to report in either the community or in healthcare facilities. However, there are still two ongoing outbreaks at long-term care facilities, and one in an acute unit.

“While there are no active community outbreaks in B.C., new cases and community exposure events continue to occur in the community,” they say. “As we continue through summer, simple steps will help us to keep COVID-19 low and slow in British Columbia.”

Dix and Henry remind British Columbians to avoid closed spaces, crowds, and close contact with others.

“We know that the more layers of protection we use, the safer we will be. Let’s all ‘layer up’ by washing our hands regularly, using barriers, staying a safe distance from others and using a mask when that is challenging.”
