Province announces new regional cancer centre in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The provincial government is adding to B.C.’s arsenal in the war against cancer.

The province has announced a new regional cancer treatment centre as part of the new Surrey Hospital in Cloverdale. It will be the seventh in B.C. and will include treatment, supportive care, and research.

“Half of British Columbians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime — many of those cases will be right here in Fraser Health, the fastest growing part of British Columbia,” Premier John Horgan, who is a cancer survivor himself, said on Thursday.

“Nothing is more important than the health of our family, the health of our loved ones, and when dealing with cancer to know that there’s a clinic populated by the best possible healthcare providers in the world in your neighbourhood is very, very positive news for everyone.”

The new Surrey Hospital is still in its planning stages, but Horgan says the cancer clinic represents a “significant investment” in the region.

“By 2027, it is expected that there’ll be a 50 per cent increase in the number of people being diagnosed with cancer. In the Fraser Health region, this will represent one in three of all the new cancers that are diagnosed across B.C.” Dr. Kim Nguyen Chi with BC Cancer said.

He said the centre will help meet the needs of people living in the region as demand rises.

“The new Surrey cancer centre layout will facilitate the transformation of cancer care to a more patient-centred approach by focusing care around the patient with team-based care, multi-disciplinary clinics, and enhanced digital health facilities,” Chi said, adding the centre will feature the latest in technology and treatments.

“This centre will host the largest precision radiation therapy program in the Fraser Health region. And a first for the Fraser Health region, the centre will also feature a state-of-the-art, functional imaging and treatment centre with two PET/CT scanners, a cyclotron, and a targeted radiopharmaceutical program.”

A business plan for the facility is expected to be done by late December, however, when the facility planned for the east side of 176 Street will be open is still unclear.
