Penticton evacuation alert lifted as Christie Mountain wildfire threat subsides

PENTICTON (NEWS 1130) — Thousands of homes in Penticton are no longer under evacuation alert as the threat of the Christie Mountain wildfire has eased.
After being in place for nearly a week, the evacuation alert for 3,669 properties in southeast Penticton was lifted Monday morning.
“In consultation with BC Wildfire and our regional partners, it’s been determined the threat caused by the Christie Mountain wildfire has subsided,” said Donny van Dyk, Penticton’s emergency operation centre director and chief administrative officer.
Heading into the weekend, wind was a concern, but BC Wildfire Service notes there haven’t been any major flareups.

The Christie Mountain wildfire is still burning at more than 2,000 hectares, and the cause is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, hundreds of homes are still under evacuation alert in the Slocan Valley due to a fire burning north of Castlegar.
Residents of 305 homes in Lebahdo, Little Slocan, Passmore, and Vallican are being told to prepare to leave the area “at a moment’s notice.”
