Delta greenhouse fire sends dark plume of smoke into air

DELTA (NEWS 1130) — A lingering plume of black smoke over South Delta Sunday morning was the result of a fire at an abandoned cannabis greenhouse.
Twenty-six firefighters and seven fire trucks were called out to the two-alarm fire near Highway 99 and Ladner Trunk Road.
Dave Eastman, battalion chief with the Delta Fire Department, says the fire was contained to the shipping storage area.
“Heavy structural damage to the warehouse shipping-receiving area of the greenhouse,” he says. “The office portion, the mechanical portion, and the actual greenhouses themselves are still good.”
Fire crews were able to douse the flames before noon.
Earlier in the morning, Nancy called NEWS 1130 and said the smoke is blanketing the Delta and Tsawwassen area.
“The flames are about 40 to 50 feet in the air,” she says.
Visibility had also been low in the area, and smoke could be seen across the Fraser River in New Westminster.
Eastman says no one was in the building and there weren’t any injuries.
The cause of the fire is still unknown at this point.
