SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Police in Surrey are trying to track down a man who’s accused of trying to lure a child into the woods over the weekend.

It happened on Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m. near 125 Street and 76 Avenue, according to a release from RCMP.

A man followed a child that was walking down the street before repeatedly asking the child to go into a wooded area and help the man look for something he had lost, police say. When a bystander confronted the man, he quickly took off.

The suspect is described as possibly middle eastern, in his 40s, 6’0″ tall, bald, and has light brown eyes. He was wearing a charcoal grey sweater and black sweat pants at the time.

If you have information about this incident, call the Surrey RCMP at 1-800-222-8477 or CrimeStoppers. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online.

Police recommend parents review the following safety tips with their children:

  • Don’t go anywhere with someone you don’t know;
  • Stay more than an arm’s reach from strangers;
  • Seek help immediately if approached by a stranger;
  • Trust your instincts, if you feel you are being followed or something is not right, seek help immediately;
  • When seeking help, always go to a trusted adult – teacher, coach, police officer, other parent, or older sibling;
  • If a stranger grabs you, do everything you can to stop them from pulling you away. Drop to the ground, kick, hit, bite, and scream. Do whatever it takes to attract the attention of others who can help you. If someone is dragging you away, scream, “This is not my dad,” or “This is not my mom;”
  • Report any suspicious activity to your local school and police department;
