UBC professors accusing students of cheating, warning them of consequences

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — As the winter term comes to a close at UBC, more alleged cheating incidents are coming to light. A warning from the school says: “it’s not worth it.”

Matt Ramsey with the university, says the consequences for students who commit academic misconduct can be severe and can have a long-term impact on their career as students.

This week, two different chemistry classes at the school got a message from their professor, revealing a student or students had cheated on the final exam — the messages were shared on social media.

Both teachers say Chegg.com — a website that allows students to rent textbooks, get online tutoring and access other student services —  was used. But the teachers say the website is also being used to share exam questions and answers.

Ramsey says both incidents are under investigation.

“In both of those incidents that the professors were very clear about just how disappointing this is to them,” he says. “Our professors are working really hard to maintain academic integrity for all of their students and UBC is a globally ranked university. We do expect our students to hold themselves to a high level of conduct and be honest and responsible members of the academic community.”

Ramsey adds, cheating not only can cost you significantly but is disrespectful to fellow students.

“It’s also incredibly unfair to those students in your class, who are who are working diligently to achieve their grades through studies and hard work.”

Last month, about 100 UBC students in the same online math class were accused of cheating, also sparking an investigation.
