First day of winter brings heavy rain, snow to Lower Mainland, warning for B.C. Interior

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Monday marks the official start to the winter season and with it comes heavy rain and snow — depending on where you are.

In Metro Vancouver, some parts could see a few wet flakes, but the main weather event to watch for is rain.

A special weather statement has been issued with up to 30 millimetres of rain expected in some parts.

Higher elevations could see snow accumulate on the ground by the evening, Monday. Rain is forecast to ease early in the evening.

Meanwhile, a snowfall warning is in effect, with total accumulations of up to 15 centimetres possible in the Fraser Valley and up to five centimetres in Metro Vancouver.

Heavy rain mixed with or turning to wet snow is forecast for Monday afternoon, with most areas expected to see between two to four centimetres.

Be cautious on the roads as weather impacts visibility.

Snow for the Interior

Farther east, winter storm and snowfall warnings are up for the Interior, including stretches of several highways.

Heavy snowfall is expected to begin Monday morning and intensify throughout the day, bringing potentially hazardous driving conditions.

The Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt, and Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton are covered by the warnings, with accumulations ranging between 25 to 35 cm.

The Coquihalla was forced closed in both directions Monday afternoon.

Up to 40 cm of snow is possible near Allison Pass.

People are being urged to avoid all non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you must be on the roads, make sure you drive for conditions and have the appropriate tires.

British Columbians are also reminded that the province is recommending against non-essential travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
