Vancouver considers naming street after Hogan’s Alley’s Nora Hendrix

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new street in Vancouver could be named after a key figure in the city’s Hogan’s Alley community: Nora Hendrix.

Council will consider on Wednesday a proposal to name one of the new streets around the new St. Paul’s Hospital development in her honour.

The street, between Gore and Thornton, running north from National Avenue, would be named Nora Hendrix Way and serve as “a permanent honour in recognition” of her role in the Strathcona community.

Besides being the grandmother of rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix, she helped start the first Black church in the Strathcona neighbourhood. Hendrix was also a cook at Vie’s Chicken and Steak House, which hosted the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.

“While her name is given to the temporary modular housing on Union Street, the Committee recognized the temporary nature of the project and felt the street next to the playing fields and the new hospital would make a fitting tribute to her,” the motion to council reads.

The key figure in the Hogan’s Alley community passed away in 1984 at the age of 100.
