Surrey RCMP apologizes to man badly hurt by officers in mistaken identity arrest

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in Surrey are offering a public apology to a man after he was badly hurt during an arrest when officers mistook him for a robbery suspect last Monday.

At around 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 8, police were called to the business along 152 St. near 104 Ave. after reports of an armed robbery. Witnesses gave a description of the suspect, saying the person left on a bike.

Mounties later stopped a man they say fit the description, but say the person resisted, resulting in a struggle. Despite being treated at the scene, it turned out the man was seriously injured.

RCMP only found out they had the wrong guy after they arrested him.

“The RCMP regrets the mistake made in identifying the man and now offers a complete apology to him,” reads a statement from the Mounties.

IIO BC, the province’s police watchdog, has stepped in to figure out if police inaction or action played a part in this case.
