QUESNEL (NEWS 1130) — A man was killed by police in Quesnel following an “interaction” that began when the RCMP “conducted a check” on a man sleeping in a vehicle.

According to B.C.’s Independent Investigation Office (IIO), which has been called in to probe the death, police noticed a car parked in a lot around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“An interaction occurred between the individual and the officers, and shots were fired by police. The individual was transported to the local hospital where they were pronounced deceased,” a statement says.

The Quesnel RCMP describes the incident differently.

“When officers approached, the man reportedly reached for a firearm, and shots were fired,” a spokesperson wrote in a statement, adding they will not be able to comment due to the IIO investigation.

Anyone who has information or witnessed the shooting is asked to call 1-855-446-8477 or us the contact form on the IIO website.
