Something’s fishy: Who dumped hundreds of pounds of fresh halibut in Vancouver?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An investigation has been launched after “several hundred pounds of fresh halibut” was found dumped near a boat launch in Vancouver last week.

It’s not clear who left the fish near Vanier Park or why, but the city says it was first notified about the discarded halibut on Thursday, Sept. 2.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has been called in and is now looking into the matter. It tells NEWS 1130 the incident is being followed up by the DFO’s Conservation and Protection Unit.

It reminds people to report any suspicious fishing activity or habitat violations.

“As was done in this case we encourage members of the public to report any suspicious fishing activity or habitat violations by contacting the nearest Fisheries and Oceans Canada office,” the DFO says in a statement.

You can also report suspicious activity or violations by email at DFO.ORR-ONS.MPO@dfo-mpo.gc.ca, or by calling the 24-hour, toll-free Observe, Record, Report line at 1.800.465.4336.

Pacific halibut is commonly found off the coast of B.C., along the continental shelf in the north Pacific, the Bering Sea, and the Gulf of Alaska. According to the DFO, they are the largest flatfish in the world, weighing up to 300 kilograms and reaching up to 2.7 metres in length.
